Difficulties in choosing computer repair services
Various firms and private craftsmen performing computer repairs at home, in the office or in their own workshops are quite popular today and are widely represented even in relatively small cities in Russia. This is not surprising: a computer, often not in a single copy, in our time is in almost every family. If we talk about the offices of companies, then it’s somehow impossible to imagine these rooms without computers and related office equipment - a huge number of processes are somehow performed using computer technology and nothing else.
But, despite the wide possibilities for choosing an executor for computer repair and computer assistance, this choice can be difficult. Moreover, the result of the work of the called master may disappoint: quality or price. I’ll try to tell in detail how to avoid this.
Over the past 4 years, I have been professionally engaged in the maintenance and repair of computers in various companies, as well as the provision of computer assistance at home to individuals. During this time, I happened to work in 4 companies that provide this kind of service. Two of them can be called "good", the other two - "bad." I am currently working individually. In any case, the existing experience allows me to distinguish them to some extent and note some signs of organizations, communicating with the representatives of which the client is likely to be disappointed. I will try to share this information with you.
Also on my site, I decided to gradually create a catalog of companies involved in computer repair in different cities, as well as a black list of computer assistance firms.
The article consists of a kind of sections as follows:
Computer help: whom to call?
A computer, as well as other equipment, tends to break down suddenly and, at the same time, at the most inopportune moment for this, just when it is needed the most - tomorrow to submit course or accounting reports, any minute you should receive an email Most Important Message, etc. And, as a result, we need help with a computer very urgently, preferably right now.
Both on the Internet and in print media, as well as on all advertising surfaces available in your city, you will definitely see advertisements for urgent computer repair by professionals in their field with free check-out and the cost of work from 100 rubles. Personally, I’ll say to myself that I really go to the customer for free, and if, in addition to the diagnostics, nothing was done or even it wasn’t done, the price of my services is 0 rubles. But, on the other hand, I do not repair computers for 100 rubles and I know for sure that no one is repairing.
First of all, I recommend not dialing the phone numbers that you will see in numerous advertisements, but calling your friends who have already had to go for computer repair services. Perhaps they will advise you a good master who knows his work and assigns an adequate price for it. Or, in any case, they will talk about where to go is not worth in any case. One of the hallmarks of "bad" firms and craftsmen is the focus on the one-time maximum profit from one client with a problem computer, without setting a goal to make this client permanent. Moreover, a number of organizations providing support to computer users, when hiring PC repair and setup wizards, directly declare this to candidates, the percentage of which income may directly depend on the amount that the specialist will take from clients. This is also the reason why such companies always have the vacancies of repair engineers - not everyone likes this style of work.
If your friends could not recommend anyone to you, then it's time to call on announcements. I did not notice a direct correlation between the quality and quantity of advertising materials of the computer repair company and the degree of satisfaction with the quality and price of the operations performed by the master. Conditional “good” and “bad” are equally common in color ads in a half-page newspaper and in laser-printed sheets of A5 format hanging on the doors of your entrance.
But certain conclusions about the advisability of seeking computer help precisely on this proposal can be made after a telephone conversation.
What to look for when calling a computer company
First of all, if you can give any exact description of the problem of the problem that has arisen with the computer by phone, do it and check the estimated price of the repair. Not in all, but in most cases this price is quite possible to indicate.
Good Computer Assistance Master
For example, if you call me and let me know that you need to remove the virus or reinstall Windows, I can specify both the lower and upper limits of the price. If on the other end they shy away from the direct answer, saying only that “Install Windows from 500 rubles,” try to clarify again, approximately as follows: “Do I understand correctly that if I call the wizard who will format the hard drive (or leave the data) ), installs Windows 8 and all the drivers for it, will I pay 500 rubles? ”
If you are told that formatting the hard drive and installing drivers is a separate service (and they say that look at the price list, we have all the prices on the price list), and also say that in addition to installing Windows, you also need to configure the operating system, it’s better not to mess. Although, most likely, they will not tell you this - the "bad" almost never call the price. I recommend calling other specialists who can name the amount or at least its limits, i.e. from 500 to 1,500 rubles - this, believe me, is much better than "from 300 rubles" and a refusal to specify details.
Let me remind you that all of the above applies only to the case when you at least roughly know what exactly happened to your computer. And if not? In this situation, after finding out the details you are interested in and if the people on the phone seemed normal to you, call the wizard, and then we'll figure it out. It’s hard to advise anything else.
Performing a setup or repair of a computer by a wizard
So, a computer help specialist arrived at your home or office, studied the problem and ... If you agreed in advance on the price and what specific services you require, just wait for all the agreed work to be completed. It will not be amiss to also check with a specialist whether the cost of his services will really be the agreed amount or if some unforeseen additional paid actions will be required. Accordingly, make a decision.
If the essence of the problem with the computer was not known to you in advance, then ask the wizard, after diagnosing the malfunction, to preliminarily indicate what exactly he is going to do and how much it will cost. Any answers, the essence of which will be reduced to "it will be seen", i.e. reluctance to name the approximate price of computer repair before its end may be a harbinger of your sincere surprise at the moment when the final amount will be announced.
Why do I focus your attention on the issue of price, not quality:
Unfortunately, it is difficult to know in advance what level of professionalism, work experience and skills will be available for the called PC repair and setup wizard. High-class professionals and young guys who are still learning a lot can work in the same company. One way or another, not even the “coolest” specialist turns out to be less harmful than a super-specialist in computer repair, information hiding (which can lead to fraud) and active sales in one bottle. So, when the choice is not obvious, it is best to first cut off scammers: a 17-year-old guy who solves any computer problem by reinstalling Windows (i.e., not by the most optimal way, but solves it) or who is at a loss to diagnose the true cause of the problems that have arisen, does not leave you without a half-month salary. In a company with the goal of “cutting the dough”, even a good master will do the job in the most non-optimal way, as described in the next section.
How to pay 10 thousand rubles for virus removal
When I first got a job in a computer repair company, the future director immediately announced that I would receive 30 percent of the order and in my interests to take more from customers, try not to tell them about the price until the end of work and gave some more practical instructions. Somewhere on the second day of work, when I removed the banner from the desktop for the client for the price indicated in the price list, I had to talk with the director for a long time. It was remembered, literally: "We do not delete banners, we reinstall Windows." I left this small business very quickly, but, as it turned out later, this manner of doing business is very, very typical, and not something out of the ordinary, as I thought before.
A good act of the work of a computer company from Perm. This is not advertising, but if they work this way, then you can contact.
Suppose you did not obey any of my recommendations, called the master, he calmly does his job, and at the end you sign the Act of completion, the amount of which discourages you. Nevertheless, the master will show that everything is done according to the price list and there can be no complaints.
Consider what the cost of removing a malicious program from a computer may form: (All the prices indicated are approximate, but taken from real experience, not just my personal one. For Moscow, the prices are higher.)
- The wizard reports that it is this virus that cannot be removed, and if removed, it will only get worse afterwards. You need to remove everything and reinstall the system;
- Asks if any user data should be saved;
- If necessary - 500 rubles for saving data, otherwise - the same amount for formatting the computer’s hard drive;
- BIOS setup (you need to install the boot from CD or USB to start the installation of Windows) - 500 rubles;
- Installing Windows - from 500 to 1000 rubles. Sometimes some preparation for installation is also highlighted, which is also paid;
- Installing drivers and setting up the OS - 200-300 rubles per driver, about 500 for setting up. For example, for a laptop for which I am writing this text, the cost of installing drivers would be from 1500 rubles, everything depends on the wizard’s imagination;
- Setting up the Internet, if you can’t do it yourself - 300 rubles;
- Installing a good antivirus with updated databases so that the problem does not recur - 500 rubles;
- Installation of additional necessary software (the list may depend on your wishes, or it may not depend) - 500 and above.
Here is such a little list with the most probable services that you might not have suspected about but which were successfully provided to you. According to the list, it turns out something in the region of 5000 rubles. But, usually, especially in the capital, the price is much higher. Most likely, I simply do not have enough experience in companies with this approach to come up with services for a larger amount. But many computer repair workers have such an experience. If you come across a company from the category of “good” ones, who, on the contrary, prefer a long-term relationship with a client and are not afraid to name prices in advance, then the cost of all the services needed to remove the virus for most cities in Russia will range from 500 to 1000 rubles. And about two times more for Moscow and St. Petersburg. This, in my opinion, is much better.
That's all about the choice of computer repair and the various nuances of this difficult matter. I hope you find this article useful in some ways. And if it turned out already - share it with your friends on social networks, buttons for which can be seen below.
